This video outlines a procedure to flush out the power steering fluid from both the power steering pump and power steering gear. This procedure will work on both recirculating ball type power steering gears as well as rack and pinion systems. (10/13/2012) I also install an in-line filter from Magnefine that includes both a magnet and paper filter element for dual filtration efficiency. This is important since most power steering systems do not have any filtration mechanism. Additionally, I convert the system over to a Type F compatible synthetic automatic transmission fluid for increased anti-wear protection, better cold weather performance, and fluid longevity. With these changes, I should be able to keep these original components functioning to OEM specifications for a very long time. One of my goals is to keep this truck as original as possible.
